Oct 20 2014 - Signed up for GM Motor Club. Added my wife and I to the policy.
Oct 21 2014 - Called to verify our vehicles were covered. One particular vehicle in question is our '97 F350 dually pickup. When it's too cold or too rainy to ride a motorcycle, I drive this truck to work/run errands. I figured the cars, Jeep and little vehicles would be no problem but a dually I wanted to make sure was covered just in case - especially since it's our tow vehicle when we hook up the trailer and go on a long trip for a weekend. I spoke to a gal on the phone for about 20min that day confirming the status of this truck...that it's less than 10,000lbs (weighs in around 8100lbs give or take empty), it's rear wheel drive, it's an automatic so it COULD be put into neutral, it's a crew cab, long bed...ect. We went over the specs. She said "We don't care what it is, as long as it's not over 10,000lbs we got you covered". This was great to hear, and at the time I was glad I made the choice to go with GM-MC instead of USAA, AAA, AARP...ect.
Next up, I also said that I am a certified ASE mechanic and I do 99% of all my own vehicle work and maintanence. If one of our vehicles broke down close to home (reasonably within an hour drive or so), I asked if I could make sure the disabled vehicle gets towed home, rather than to a "repair facility"...my home garage is my repair facility. She said, "you name the repair facility and we'll get the vehicle home, no matter what". I couldn't have been more happy with this decision.
Fast forward to November 1st, 2014. Sure enough, I take the F350 on a long trip and the engine starts smoking out the tail pipe and I pull over in a residential area. I could chance it and turn around to go home but to avoid further damage to the engine, I call GM Motor Club for a tow home. After waiting on hold for 15 minutes or so, I finally get an agent (a different gal) on the phone and I start to arrange the 47 mile tow home from where I broke down. The lady on the phone says she will only tow the truck 2 miles away, which is the nearest repair facility. I mention to her that I wanted it towed home, especially since the "repair facility" 2 miles away isn't certified for diesel work. She says if I want the truck towed home, she is only liable for the first 20 miles, after that it comes out of my pocket and I need to write a check for $90-something dollars to the tow company at the time of drop off. I remind her of the conversation I had on Oct 21, that I was promised I could bring the truck home and that mileage NEVER came up in the conversation. I asked many many times if there was a mileage limit and NEVER once was I told about a 20 mile limit if I want it towed home rather than to the "nearest repair facility"... I start thinking to myself, $90-something dollars aint that bad, just do it. So we start to go forward with scheduling the tow and she gathers my information. '97, F350, DUALLY.......
This is where I got ticked and all he!l broke loose for GM Motor Club's reputation. She says to me after I told her "DUALLY", that GM Motor Club doesn't support a 6-wheel vehicle and that I'm on my own. She started to ask if there's anything else I could do and was ready to hang up until I started reminding her of the conversation I had on Oct 21... She said it's considered a "commercial vehicle" and that I'm not covered. I ranted and rave for a little while so to try and be helpful, she calls the tow company back and asks if they'll be able to handle the dually. They agree, but for another $49.99 charge. So now apparently I owe the trucking company $149-something dollars when they drop the truck off and they can be on site in 3 to 4 hours. Bull$sh!t. I don't have time to wait for this, and I can't believe I'm getting the run around...so I cancel everything and ask to be transferred to their customer service department.
Fast forward 15 more minutes on hold to get someone in their customer service department, I cancelled my GM Motor Club membership and got a pro-rated $60 dollars back that will hopefully show up in the mail soon. I'm not holding my breath.
