I visted Gastroenterology Associates in Chesapeake, Virgina and saw Dr. Scott Yagel.
I was experiencing medical problems with discomfort while sitting of which I assumed were external hemorrhoids. I (embarrassingly so) even brought in photos to show the Dr. Yagel and the severity of them. He insisted that the first course of action was a colonoscopy, which I agreed to and paid for. All was good, so then he said we would move forward and band the hemorrhoids. He said this had to be in a 3 step process requiring 3 visits / procedures. All along I assumed he was banding the external hemorrhoids, and while at the 3rd visit in the middle of the process I advised that I had no relief and the hemorrhoids had not been reduced at all, and it was not until then that he told me he was NOT doing anything to the external hemorrhoid, but rather the internal. He is a very dismissive doctor and rushes you out and gives no attention your questions or time to listen to information you share about you medical concerns.
After 3 procedures and not even a slight amount of relief from the hemorrhoids I wrote the office of Gastroenterology Associates a letter advising that the problem expected to be addressed was not what was discussed or agreed to. In the letter I asked for the bill to be cancelled, though I also made clear I would pay it if they declined.
In the closing of the letter I asked that they help not to delay payment and respond to my letter. This letter was mailed to their office and emailed to their Chesapeake location, Norfolk location, and their billing department. My letter was totally ignored. Not even a “we’re looking in to it” response. Though I don’t think so, there may have been some fine print that I over looked that could have been buried in the massive documents I had to read, but there was never a verbal discussion about removing internal hemorrhoids. Only the removal of the external hemorrhoids was discussed. As far as I can see this was an unauthorized procedure and therefore a “rip off” as I will have forked out over $1,000 after insurance without addressing the problem that was specifically discussed.
