I joined the LA Fitness center located in Bridgeville, PA in August of 2014. At that time I informed the sales person that I did not have a credit card and needed to pay cash only. I was told this would not be a problem. I paid my initial fee along with the first and last month membership dues in cash. Each month afterwards I personally went to my LA Fitness center and paid $30.00 in cash. In October 2014 I even paid $60.00, which put me ahead on my payments.
Everything was fine until January of this year (2015). Unknown to me a Mastercard credit card started appearing on my account and was being billed for my monthly dues. I continued to pay in person and at no time was I informed that this credit card existed. Then in February of 2015 I started getting email notificatations that my payment was not going through and that I needed to update my payment options. I ignored the notifications because I knew I was paid up to date. Then I started getting phone calls from the corporate billing office stating that there was a $3.60 outstanding payment owed and that they needed a valid credit card to bill the payment too. I informed the person at the billing office that I was a cash paying customer and that I was up to date on my payments. When I asked why I was being charged the $3.60 nobody could give me an answer.
Today, March 3, 2015 I got yet another call from the billing office that they needed a valid credit card and that I still owed the $3.60. I told them yet again that I do not now, nor have I ever had a credit card, nor do I want a credit card and that I am a cash paying customer. Having had enough of this harrassment I went to my LA Fitness center in Bridgeville and tried to clear the matter up. A supposed manager named Stephanie, who refused to give me her last name, stated that I supposedly had a Mastercard on file and that the payment was being denied by the card. Yet again I explained that I am a cash paying customer and that I am paid up to date. I informed Stepahnie that the credit card on file was not mine. I have never used a credit card to pay my bill. I asked her to remove the card from my account, Stephanie refused to honor the request. She kept blabbering on that I needed to provide a valid credit card. I finally told her that she needed to stop beating that dead horse, I do not have a credit card and if that is the case then I want to cancel my membership immediately.
Stephanie did cancle my membership and she waived the $3.60 fee. The second problem that occured was that Stephanie did print out a supposed verification that my membership is canceled, but she claimed she could not print out a verification that the $3.60 fee had been waived. I asked her write a statement on the first verification that she handed me that this ridiculous fee had been waived and to sign it. She refused. I wrote a statement and asked her to sign it, again she refused. Finally she called someone and they told her how to print out the second verification. I was not impressed with the coustomer service by either the Bridgeville LA Fitness center, nor the corporate billing office. I do not trust that my membership has been canceled, that the fee from the bogus credit card transaction has been resolved and I am not happy that a bogus Mastercard credit card is associated with my account and no one at LA Fitness seems to find this important.
This place has the most unethical management I've ever encountered. When I went to downgrade my membership in 2013, I was told I could only do so in person, during specific hours speaking directly to the general manager. It took me a month to do so and only when I threatened to cancel.
Months later when I decided that the rude staff and the over-chlorinated pool were too much for me, I cancelled my account. I was given a date by when my cancellation would process (because you pre-pay your first and last month at the beginning). I was very surprised several months later to see that they had not cancelled me and had continued to bill my credit card. When confronted with this, the general manager insisted I provide proof and refused to refund me. When I insisted she threatened to have her staff bounce me out of the gym.
