I had parking spaces at this place for over 9 years. They went to some ownership changes over the years. For the last couple of years I had paid the rent for a year in advance and got one month for free. It is a bit crowded and difficult to get in and out with a larger car, but worked ok for me. When I wanted to move out as I am now more in the North Bay. I asked about 5 weeks before the end of my prepaid lease about moving out conditions. I was told by two different employees that if I moved out one whole month in advance I would get a refund. Ok, I hustled, moved out August 30, and was told that I would get a refund for the prepaid month of September in a couple of weeks. My access code was canceled right away. I left my car on the street for a couple of days and moved into my new storage space in the North Bay. Since I did not hear from them, i called again and talked to the manager. He inquired and told me NOW that I would not get a refund because I had paid the year in advance. After some back and forth with him I asked to call with management but they never bothered to got back to me. In my view, that is just crooked. I had paid for a month more of storage, and had moved out early based on the info that the company representatives gave me. Now they suddenly change their mind and leave me picking up the tap. So my recommendation: Don't go there.
This storage company had my unit up for foreclosure on June 12, 2014. I went to pay off and get my items out before this occured. I found out they not only cut off my lock, but they had rumaged through my unit. This is not right and I will never use this company again. I didn't think they were supposed to enter until the date of foreclosure. I will be filing a complaint with the better business bureau on this company as well. Advice to anyone do not use Extra Space Storage they are an unethical company.
On March 20 I called the Rocky Hill location where all of my belongings were being stored since July of last year. The purpose of the call was to update my contact and billing information.
The updated information was received by the manager of the location at the time. After noticing there had been no charges to my credit card on my May or June statement I called to inquire.
The manager saw in the notes that the information was provided to be updated but was not. Because they had not updated my phone number they did not reach me. This resulted in a two month balance. The company vacated my unit by auctioning off all of my belongings.
Originally the company had acknowledged this tragedy was a result of an error by their employee and assured me they would rectify this. Now management has explained that the company’s legal department believes that legally they are not responsible to compensate me. They do not feel obligated to provide me the funds necessary to replace my belongings.
In summary Extra Space failed to update my information, sold all of my belongings, acknowledged they made a big mistake, and then decided legally they were not required to compensate me for the loss of all of my possessions. They failed to charge the card I provided and when I became 2 months late sold $20,000 worth of my possessions to cover $300 they were owed. I can't believe they won't make good on thier mistake but more alarming is that they are allowed to and actually benefit from not updating someone's account and selling all of thier belongings.
