Exhibitor Housing Services emailed me indicating that they were appointed by the conference organizer to book hotel rooms for exhibitors. It sounded legitimate to me as I did not consider that they would have searched the conference organizer's website to find out that our company was an exhibitor.
Only when I arrived at the Sheraton in downtown Toronto did I realize that I had no hotel booking. When I asked the Sheraton they had no record of me or of Exhibitor Housing Services. When I contacted Exhibitor Housing Services they said that I broke the contract because my work colleague who stayed in the other room did not match what I originally booked with them (which is true). How they found this out I will never know.
I am currently in the process of trying to get Visa to refund me for the charges but it doesn't look good.
This is one sophisticated scam and I can see why hundreds of people have been taken advantage of to date. What I can't understand is why neither the government nor the credit card companies seem able to shut them down.
