We paid a $300 down on a unit that we did not even view. The property manager, Tara, took us to the apt while the tenants were still in the apartment and showed us the front room only. While in the unit, we observed not only the extensive repairs needed, but also that there were two aggressive breed dogs in the unit below us who barked constantly, reverberating throughout the whole building. The property manager verbalized repeatedly about the tenant with the dogs was "a nuisance" and that she had been given notice. However later , she then said that the person would not be moving out at this time. While on the tour, the property manager continued to voice disparaging remarks about other tenants in the building and their " BS" and what she has to put up with on a daily basis by herself as she has “no one to help her out at all ." On return to the office, she handed us an application to fill out right then and took the money for the fees. While in the office, a group of small boys were fighting outside and upon finding out that one had hit the other, vocalized that she didn't care if they " beat the sh** out of him " for hitting the other.
She never went over the paperwork nor did she vocalize at any time that if we gave her any type of monetary deposit that it would not be refunded. The apartment was uninhabitable and would be for several weeks. We would have to return to actually view the unit we were going to be paying for. As of today, we still have not seen the unit at all.
Upon further discussion, we decided that this was not the property for us due to the unprofessionalism, the problem with the dogs and the fact that the property seemed to be unmanageable. We then advised the property manager a week before we were supposed to come in and sign a lease (we haven't even seen a lease at this point), that we would not be taking the apartment, upon which she advised she deposited our money and we wouldn't get it back. We STILL haven't even seen the apartment, the dogs are still there and in talking to the Management Company, and they advise we can't have the deposit back because we told her we wanted it. We voiced several times that the issues would need to be addressed before move in.
In speaking to the Mgmt Company again today, they voiced details in relation to our application that had nothing to do with us. (Rep said it was for my "son”. I do not have a son in this state, and he is 12. I would not be renting an apt for my son) I do not think anyone actually knows what is going on at that property, least of all the Mgmt company. We should not have to deal with this. I have now spoken to Dottie a number of times and have voiced several times that I would like to speak with the Regional Mgr Jeff , yet he refuses to speak with me, only having her call to tell me that returning my $300 is “ not an option and nothing will change that.”
We did NOT accept the apartment, site unseen and most certainly were not aware that she would be keeping our money regardless. This needs to be verbalized when going over the applications that not only will you lose the app fees but also any other monies you put down. I cannot begin to tell you the level of disrespect and sheer indifference shown to us by those we have been in contact with.
I would simply ask that our “deposit” amount of $300 be returned to us as a courtesy due to the disparaging treatment we have received.
