Drayer Physical Therapy Institute Reviews

  • May 27, 2015

My 8 year-old twin boys have special needs and have been receiving Occupational Therapy for about a year and a half at Drayer. They were to have this in additional therapy done at their school, so they were supposed to be focusing on home- and community-based goals at Drayer, since the school system is working with them on school-based goals.

Instead, the Occupational Therapist mainly focuses on the same goals as the school therapist, also teaching different ways to complete the same activity (such as how to write certain letters), which confuses the boys. Additionally, one child has had the same goals for about a year now, and has (per the the therapist) no improvement. The other chid has only handwriting goals (should be done at school) and one goal that involves replicaling patterns with blocks. The school has documented such impressive improvement that they are reducing their therapy frequency and will mainly focus on monitoring progress and are even changing them to another school due to their impovement.

I have discussed the reported lack of progress at Drayer with the therapist, office manager, and the regional vice president. The therapist dismissed my concerns, informing me that she has had many years of experience and that she gives standardized test and can do nothing about the results. The school even gave the exact same test (Beery VMI) a week earlier and both boys scoring much higher. Drayer management simply stands behind the therapist.

Both boys receive theray in the same room, at the same time, with one therapist and an assistant. Each is billed for one hour of individual therapy. I believe this creates a temptation to find reasons to continue therapy even when no longer necessary.

I have received no clarifcation from Drayer as to why there is such a discrepancy between their assessment and the school's. No clear dicharge criteria or even measurable therapy goals have been provided. Because I share 50/50 custody of the children, their father and I must agree on removing them from therapy. Although he has some concerns as well, since he does not have any medical background (I do), he is unsure about withdrawing the children without "permission" from a professional. Drayer is aware of this. In my opinion, they are taking advantage of this, and especially taking advantage of my children.
