We were scammed by Dollar Rent-a-Car in Tampa FL in March of 2017. We paid $155 down on a compact car rental. We only owed $105 more upon arrival flying into Tampa from Pennsylvania. The girl at the Dollar/Thrifty/Hertz desk at Tampa offered us every possible up charge under the sun which we declined. I told her we had damage protection thru our car insurance policy and declined the damage protection. She illegally added the $29.49 per day to our credit card bill without our knowledge. We didn't know Dollar Rent-a-Car defrauded us until a month later when the credit card bill came and we were overcharged by $235.92. Dollar refused to give us a refund. We contacted BBB, this is a known scam. We got no cooperation from Dollar. When you sign electronically you have signed a bunch of fine print and they have girls adding charges, getting paid commissions, and they have your signature because you have to use a credit card. We had $235.92 stolen from us by Dollar/Thrifty/Hertz and they refused to refund the money even when we confronted them.
I rented a car from Dollar Rent-A-Car at the Fort LauderdaleAirport. I used the car and returned it with just 64 miles driven sustaining absolutely no damages during my rental period (I drove from the airport to my brother's driveway, and then my brother's driveway to the airport. Dollar made a claim against me for damages incurred which has no merit at all. I believe the claim is a hoax and is perhaps insurance fraud for the following reasons:
1. When I picked up the car, it had damages and I filled out documentation to that effect.
2. The damage incident report says the "customer say he pick up the car with the damage." Aside from being a poorly worded sentence, I wonder why Dollar Rent A Car didn't check out the check out slip from the date I picked up the car to either CONFIRM OR DISCONFIRM if, in fact, the damages were sustained before I rented the car. More importantly, I never said anything to the person I was returning the car to except perhaps "thank you." I absolutely said nothing about the damage when I returned the car. I returned it and figured that the documentation that I filled out before leaving the Dollar lot the first moment makes the scratches a moot issue. I said nothing to the attendant of that sort, so the statement that I said anything about damage is a lie, even though in fact, I did pick up the car with the damage.
3. The mileage on the auto repair estimate Dollar sent me is over 325 miles higher than the milage on the car when I turned it back in. Somewhere between the 10th, when I rented the car, and the 11th, when the damage was assessed, someone drove the car well over 300 miles. Yahoo maps puts the address written on the damage assessment only 2.8 miles from the FLL airport where I rented the car. Why does the car have approximately 6 hours of driving on it from the time I returned it, to the time it went to the damage assessment unit, the very next day? Suspicious.
4. One of the calls I got from the claims office to my phone asked for someone else, so I got to thinking. They are calling someone else, but with my telephone number. Perhaps a mistake, but perhaps they are calling multiple people for the same claim. What are the chances of two claims, two different people, and the same car? I suspect the company is submitting claims for the same damages, on the same car, to different people and never repairing the damage.
5. I have the paperwork I filled out when I picked up the car that shows the mileage, the damages clearly documented, etc. The company conveniently did not include this in its letter asking me for money -- over $500.
6. The claims office is totally unresponsive and they insist only on returning my calls on the number that was on the original paperwork. I have left several messages with Dollar saying that this is no longer my telephone number. My experience has shown that lack of professionalism and unresponsiveness go hand-in-hand with poor business ethics. I have called them 8 to 9 times per day and they never pick up and I have left many messages and they have yet to return my call.
I did get through with them once and got in touch with Christine McCorkle, who had written me the letters. The moment I got on, I got another call and I apologized and told her to hold on a moment and I'll get the other call off the line. About 10 seconds into the call I switched into, I heard her hang up. I got off the phone with the caller and I called back less than a minute later. No answer. I called Christine back about 4 times that hour, no answer. I have left numerous messages and no one has returned my calls; although, I noticed that they called back on my old telephone number from the contract.
I see that Christine McCorkle may have moved to Enterprise and she's up to no good there too. I believe this person is hired to do the repair scams. Or I wonder if there really is a Christine McCorkle or if that's just one of the aliases used when doing this scam.
I avoid the Dollar Thrifty Group no matter how good the price is. If you get a letter or call from a Christine McCorkle, you're probably being scammed.
Unjustified do not rent on Dollar Rent A Car files
In 2006 on behalf of my company I rented a van from Dollar Rent A Car. As we had done several times in the past. We called in a reservation from the office and I went to get the vehicle. At the time I was asked for my license and business credit card. Never any mention of rules pertaining company drivers except for their terms and conditions stating company drivers were allowed to drive the vehicle.
One we of the workers was involved in an accident. We returned the car, and felt confident that the repairs were on Dollar as we obtained their damage waiver for any damage to the car. Wrong.
A few weeks after return Dollar loss control contacted us about the damage stating the company was liable for the damage, at that time we we proved it was a business rental and felt confident that the issue was resolved Wrong again
Jump to today, I went with a family member who rented a car from Dollar to be listed as an additional driver on his rental. This in when I found out I was on their DNR list for the incident 9 years ago.
When enlightened of the matter I called the phone number the rental agent gave me ( of course the rental counter would not assist in making the call at that time) the first call to the 800 number provided led only to obtaining another 800 number which then led to a minimum of 6 transfers from departments of Dollar and then to Thrifty and where ever else they transferred me about the only thing these people could tell me was I was on the list for unpaid damage however one lady went as far as telling me it was for them having to send an agent out to locate and retreive a car ( bs never happened) finally a women told me I would have to call a 405 number so I did.
Now that the call was on my dime or let's say my dollars for all the on hold time I was once again instructed to call another number this was hope the agent Rhonda informed me I was not on the list and to go back to the rental location and if any problem call her back. Well the return call was needed however this time different agent who after several minutes now gave me another number to call
Furious I left the location called the number and after 40 minutes with one agent going no where, except for finding he was well adversed in using the word "well" getting P.Oed I asked for someone above him. That when ms arrogant got on the line.
Telling me that the driver was not covered as it was not a business rental and at the time the driver was sighted for not processing his license and that the only one who could settle the matter was the collection company who purchased the account 8 years ago.
I reserved a compact car with priceline.com for 15 days and got a quote for $296.41 with Dollar Rental in San Juan Puerto Rico. check in 4/25/15 at 10:pm check out at 12:noon 5/10/15.when I arrived at Dollar they up graded to a mid-size car. Dollar rental charged me $672.59 my total charge with priceline & dollar rental car is $969.00 I feel I was over charged $299.25. i have the bill if you need me to email it.
My daughter rented a vehicle for Dollar Rental car for 6 days. She was given a quote of $350 for 6 days, which included the under age drivers fee. Upon retrieving the vehicle, the rental clerk told her that she was required to get the insurance. My daughter stated that she was already insured via State farm and as well via the Amex card that she was using to secure the rental. However, the rental was still charged. Upon returning the vehicle my daughter noted the $750 charge and was told that $400 was used as a deposit to secure the rental and that it would be returned to the card. It was never returned. When she contacted Dollar again, someone else stated that the $750 was the total cost of the rental. Who in their right mind would pay $750 for a 6 day car rental in Las Vegas, when you can get a taxi at a fraction of the cost. These people saw a young girl with a buisness Amex card and took advantage. I'm outraged.
I decided to save money on a recent trip and made arrangements to rent a car, using my AAA discount, and found after checking that Dollar had the best rate, for one week, with unlimited mileage. I had to wait an extra day to get the car, in order to get the discounted rate. At the time I rented it, I got some collision insurance coverage as my own policy did not have this. At that point, they upgraded the car to one a little bigger. I unfortunately did not check to see what I was paying for this vehicle and thought that I was getting it for the same rate.
I was shocked to discover on my credit card bill that I paid almost $200 more than I was originally supposed to have paid. Although I had other reasons for driving to my destination, I could have flown for the same amount of money or even less. Apparently Dollar is known for doing this kind of crap, charging more for the car than what the person thinks they are going to have to pay.
A lot of the complaints seem to come from Florida, too. Every one of the people who has complained about this company has said they will never rent from Dollar again. I have just joined their ranks. I'll take a train or bus if I need to travel by land, in the future. At least Greyhound doesn't rip off their customers. I cannot help but wonder if AAA is in league with their practices, as they promote Hertz for rental cards and that is the parent company of Dollar. Needless to say, I will never go a AAA sponsored car rental agency in the future, either, and will be careful about the businesses that they offer "discounts" at, one of which is a car repair shop that I gone to in the past, and I now believe is starting to milk me.
WE WILL NEVER RENT FROM DOLLAR RENT A CAR AGAIN AFTER WHAT HAPPENED TO US!!!
This letter is concerning a recent car rental in Roatan, Honduras with your company.
We had made an online booking for a small car through Expedia from 3/22 – 3/30/2015.
Upon arrival at the Dollar Rent a Car counter at the Roatan airport, we were given a red …..
A Dollar employee performed a walkaround inspection and noted existing scratches and dents on the car.
He verified the presence of the spare tire and jack, which was located in the trunk area. He did NOT inspect the spare for damages or wear (did not remove spare tire from compartment).
All observations were noted on a vehicle check out sheet which we signed.
Upon returning the vehicle to the same rental location, a male and female employee of Dollar approached the car curbside at the terminal. While the female verified fuel level, the male employee went straight to open the trunk. He then removed the cover and removed the spare tire out of its compartment.
After thoroughly inspecting the spare and conversing extensively with his female co-worker in Spanish, I asked him what the problem was. He replied that the spare had been used and mounted while the car was in our possession. The tire was covered in dirt and had damage to the rim, and indeed looked like it at been used at some point.
I told him, that neither my wife nor I had used/mounted the spare tire. In fact, we had not even touched the spare.
Further, he told us that we had to pay $90 to replace the damaged tire. Of course, we were outraged and asked to speak to a supervisor.
It so happened that supervisor Sra Anna Barahona was talking to another customer at the Dollar counter.
After explaining the situation to her, she straight out accused my wife and I of having used the spare tire and damaged it in the process. We explained to her that we had not used the tire and that this very much looked like a scam which the Dollar employees probably repeated over and over to make an extra buck.
Even after repeating our innocence several times, she just walked away. She was later unavailable to talk to us further, and relayed to us via her counter help that we could settle the issue with just paying $40.00.
We had no choice, but to accept the charges. We almost missed our plane because of this incident. We will dispute this charge through American Express.
Interestingly, while waiting in line for our airline check-in, I noticed the very same car we had just returned being re-rented by another customer. I approached the customer and advised him to be cautious and inspect the spare tire before signing the check-out sheet. As he pulls out the spare tire, wouldn’t you know it, the same spare that we just got scammed with, was back in the trunk, waiting for its next unsuspecting victim.
In the past, we have rented cars from your company on numerous occasions, and were always pleased with your product and good customer service. In fact, we recommended Dollar Rent A Car to many of our friends. As you know, there are many choices available when it comes to car rentals.
However, this recent, very unpleasant incident has left a bitter taste in our mouths. How is it possible that employees of your Roatan location are running a scam such as this one under the Dollar Rent A Car brand? These guys need to be stopped.
I am writing in regards to an incident I incurred with Dollar Rent A Car at the Salt Lake City airport. I made a reservation online through Kayak. The reservation was for $480.00 including taxes and fees. We arrived were rushed through the registration process. I ordered insurance online for $11.99. McKenna, the Dollar agent, said it was that price. We were told to sign on a few lines and were given back one paper to pick up the car in the lot. When we returned the car, I was given a bill for $972.05. The agent couldn't explain the charges and told me to call the next day. I called back that night and spoke to McKenna who was extremely rude. When I questioned the charge the only thing she said was, "you signed it, it's in your contract! It's highlighted with a purple circle".
She was unable to explain the doubling of the quoted price and denied quoting us the $11.99 price for insurance. I called back one more time after calling my credit card company because I was actually charged $1100.00! The girl who answered the phone was Lindsey and she was extremely rude! I was put on hold because she was unable to answer my question and did not help me before. I was then hung up on. I called back once again and McKenna was extremely defensive and argumentative. She basically told me she really didn't care if I was the customer or not. That she was offended that I questioned her.
The next day I spoke with Julie Katasalic, who was just as rude and unhelpful, she refused to help me and give me a copy of my contract. She also was confrontational and was void of any customer service skills. I asked her who her supervisor was she said she was the only supervisor. I continued to press for information on who she reported to and she said that she reported to no one, signed her own paychecks and was the president and CEO of Dollar rent a car.
After further research into this matter I discovered several complaints and bad reviews, including a class action lawsuit, on various websites about Dollar Rent A Car. This seems to be a common occurrence with this company. I feel that I was scammed and cheated out of my hard earned money. I am also severely disappointed in the manner that the employees at the Salt Lake City Airport franchise handled the manner. It was unprofessional and disrespectful.
Rented a car from Dollar Rental at the Orlando airport. Drove to Disney World and did not use the car for the duration of our trip. We put only 58 miles on the car.
3 weeks later, we receive a bill from Dollar Rental stating we ran through a toll in Ft. Myers.
First of all, there was only 58 miles on the rental car. Ft. Myers is over 200 miles from Orlando.
This must be some sort of scam! Would love to have an attorney contact me on this.
I rented two automobiles in June, 2014. The attendance gave me the option of returning the car full of gas or prepaying...I told her that we would return the cars full, which after paying $154 for diesel, they were returned FULL. After receiving my VISA statement, I noticed they charged me and additional $170 for diesel. I emailed them about the problem, sent them receipts, and they continue to refuse to reimburse me for the unauthorized charge to my VISA account. As a result, I rented two cars for three days and it cost me over $1000! Beware of renting from this company. They will RIP YOU OFF and blame you for the problem!
I am an elite flyer with business elite class status with several rental car companies. My assistant booked dollar general for a recent stay in Austin and not only was the service poor but I felt that the situation warranted almost fraudulent bate and switch type service. While my reservation was booked well in advance, upon arrival rep Matt Rincon informed me no cars were available in my class. My choice was a mini-van or truck. When I said I would take the truck, he informed me that would be an increased charge per day of $10. The mini van would not have an up charge.
To me this is beyond ridiculous. First of all I am a business traveler - I have no interest in a mini van. If you can't manage your inventory system, it shouldn't cost me additional money. When I asked Matt if that was truly my only option - that company policy is to upcharge the customer or stick me in a mini van he said yes at which point I promptly canceled my reservation, moved to the next counter at Enterprise and promptly informed my assistant to avoid dollar whenever possible.

Dollar Rent a Car is a criminal enterprise

Thanks,
Dawn
Really horrible horrible customer service.
