I received a call asking if I would be interested in getting a credit card service and was asked if a representative could come out and talk with me? They he woulld not come into the house but would talk with me outside. He arrived and we talked and during that talk he said that equipment would be free and all it would cost is $6.00 a month. Later in the conversation he that there would a $99.00 charge but that it would not be charged until later sometime down the road after. He did not say what the charge was, One week later my account was charged $108. he also said that I must have a landline and I told him that all I ever used was my cell phone.he said that I must have a landline to get this service. He asked me if there was a landline near by and I said I am sure that there is because there are plenty of business around here. he then told me I should wait about 3 weeks and call the company and tell them that I need a device for my cell phone and they would send it to me. I asked him why I just couldn't get a device for my cell phone and not get the other equipment. The day the equipment arrived I started getiing phone calls from him about four I think, I was with a client and so I could not answer the phone. Finally I talked to him and he said that he had to travel somewhere in the afternoon so I must come home as soon as possible to register the equipment. We had to visit four or five business before someone would let us use their phone line. He also told me that a copy of what I signed would be emailed to me, it was not. I started thinking about how shady the situation was handled and decided I need to return the equipment back and get my money back. When I called they told me the $108 was not refundable, they also told me that I must send them a letter closing my account, their representative told me all I had to do was return the equipment and the account would be closed. If I had known thaat they were going to take money out of my account I would not have taken the business because I am just getting started and cannot afford suck a charge immediately. The compant may be honest but their representative is not. My next step will be the Attorney General Office because I was not given a chance to rescend.
A salesperson for the Crescent Processing Company offered my small business a credit card processor. He said the monthly fee was $6.50 and each transaction would cost 1.6%. He also said it would be a 2-year contract.
I signed a 22-page document full of legal terms that I did not understand, then I began being charged over $53.00 a month in fees, in addition to the 1.6% transaction fees. The salesperson did not disclose that I would also be paying fees for eight other merchant services that I did not need, such as ""gift card service,"" ""check service,"" and ""debit PIN service.""
The first time I called the company to ask about the excessive fees I was told that the extra services would be cancelled from my account. That was a lie. The monthly fees were still over $53.00.
When I called the second time to cancel the account I was told the cancellation fee would be $495.00. The salesperson had never mentioned a cancellation fee. The rep on the phone also said my contract was for 4 years, even though the salesperson told me it was for 2 years. When I told the rep that the salesperson lied and did not disclose the details, she responded ""that was 6 months ago!"" She knew I was scammed and did not care.
I am stuck with Crescent until I find another processing company that is willing to pay my cancellation fee or a lawyer who can prove the company was deceptive and remove the contract.
My advice to small business owners is to read over the fine print in these huge contracts and ask a lot of questions before signing anything. If the salesperson is pressuring you, tell him to come back the next day after you have read the contract.
