Coventry Healthcare is a horrible company run by horrible people. I have been covered by them twice in the past at previous employers, and even had a hospital stay covered by them long ago, so i thought that when i selected them through the health marketplace, it would be a good choice. Boy was I wrong!
I sent a payment to them the middle of the month, the payment was processed on the 4th of the following month, and a cancellation letter was sent to me dated the 5th, the DAY AFTER they processed it. I had tracking on the letter because of previous issues trying to pay these people, and letter was delivered on the 26th of the month i sent it. Their mailing facility is the Tampa,FL office, normal mail and ebay items take 3-4 days to make it here from that region. After telling the representative this information I was told that I wouls have to file an appeal by mail, to the same office. I then decided it was not worth my time anymore to fight with them and have since obtained another plan from a reputable company.
After all of this, i recieved a check from them for one month's premium payment (i had paid 2) after the termination. Two days after recieving the check, I recieved a collection bill threatening to sue for the one month of premium they had refunded. It also stated that I would be inelligable for the marketplace if I didnt pay them immediatly. When I called about the issue, she said I didnt owe then I asked her to look again. She then said "oh i see we sent that notice, but you should disregaurd. " I made sure to ask for a conversation ID so they wont try to do it again.
This is just one problem that this "healthcare act" has caused. The online marketplace is a joke and pushes the worst insurance companies at you. Coventry also lets you make the first payment on your credit card, but when the next month comes around they deny that they take credit card payments at all. Mismanagement and lack of oversight and structure of this healthcare reform is costing everyone money,
My family and I took out a policy with Coventry Healthcare of the Carolina's Inc. in 2012. In June of 2014 I requsted in writing to be removed from the policy and to have my wife and child remain on the policy at the prorated premium amount. I requested the removal because Coventry had begun to refuse to fill my prescriptions that I had been taking for nearly five years before getting a policy with them. Coventry failed to remove me from the policy although I called them no less than four times per month between June and September. Every month that they failed to correct the policy they provided the excuse that I had to send in an "ACH" form which I did seventeen (17) times in four months (no exaggeration). For more than four (4) months coventry over drew my checking account for $305 and cost me more than $400.00 in bank overdrafts. Because of provisions in the ACA, a bank is federally restricted from stopping payment on any premiums going to a health insurance policy even if it is bogus. On September 4, 2014 I notified Coventry to terminate the entire policy and all policy holders because they indicated that they need another (#18) ACH form completed and filled out. Every step of the way they kept telling us "your refund will be in your account in 7-10 business days..." which never came. I filed two (2) complaints with the NC DOI who even attempted to intervene, however they were unsuccessful at the end of the day. As I write this I am trying to get through to them, and they owe me more than $1,300.00 in over draws and fees. They have cost me and given me nothing by denied my claims and modified my coverage when ever they saw fit. Stay away from Coventry! They are a garbage company and need to be out of business. They were bad before the ACA took effect, afterwards they just got legislative protection to treat their customers like snot. I was literally told to calm down or they would hang up on me, for getting upset and referring to their behavior and ineptitude as "bull sh@t" and telling them I was going have to sue. No service provider, merchant, or other business person should ever tell a paying customer anything other than "I am going to get this fixed for you immediately." Caveat emptor, buyer beware! Coventry is garbage, they will take your money, deny your coverages, and when you do terminate the policy they will keep charging you and then screw with you for months before getting your money back to you. Remember this when you vote! ACA is garbage, managed health care is garbage, and government does not fix anything. I have been in government health care for years, and the best care I ever received was with OptimaHealth before I had to switch to Coventry when I moved. And I paid for it!
