24 years ago I was visited by 2 older ladies from county schools home study. At that time, I was a young mother with 2 small babies on welfare and was interested in doing the home shooling because of having small children. I signed up to take the Hotel Motel Management course and for 6 months did all of my schoolwork, did all of my exams and sent them in (wasting postage stamps obviously) and they were each graded and sent back to me with passing scores. The very last exam of the course, things were no different. I did the test, placed it in an envelope and sent it to the school. I waited and waited for my graded test to come back but the only thing I received was a letter of termination and a bill from the loan company stating I had been terminated and now owed over $2000 in school loans. 24 years later I am unable to get any kind of school loan and further my education because of this. I believe without a shadow of a doubt that this was a fly by night scam set up to target young women on welfare that they figured would never amount to anything and here we are years later still paying the price for it.
