My two brothers and I live in Eden Springs apartment complex, today we woke up to find that my 2004 Hyundai Elantra was missing. At first I thought it was stolen, it was parked in a parking spot the night before, right outside our apartment where we left it. Then I realized that it had to have been towed, to be honest at this point I still wasn't sure, and was hoping that it had been towed and not stolen.
After calling around a few places because there aren't any towing signs around my apartment, I found that my car was being held by Complete Impound, a towing company hired by Eden Springs to keep an eye on the parking violations within the parking lots.
At first I was happy, but then confused, why was my car there? I was told that I had parked "uneven" and my car was not "lined up with the other cars". Therefore, it was justifiable to tow it. I asked if there were any traffic violations broken and was told no, my parking job was just sloppy.
This threw a wrench into my entire day, I am a full time student at Ohio State University as well as a part-time worker on campus where I work 20 hours a week. A good 90% of my money goes directly to bills and rent.
The fact that this all happened the same week that rent is due causes this incident to be even more ridiculous. I was late to my first class today and my brothers had problems making it to work. One of them doesn't get off work until 11 pm at night.
We all relied on the car at some point in the day. We're still not sure how my older brother will get home tonight, however, his best bet is walking. The main reason why I haven't gone to get my car is first money, I just don't have it.
I was told that I would be charged $109, which includes a storage fee, despite the fact that Ohio law states that storage fees can't be applied until after 24 hours have passed, when this was pointed out to the receptionist, she hung up.
The second reason why I haven't been able to get my car is the fact that it is too far away. It takes about 20 minutes to get there by car. The only one that I have is in their possession. When I asked to challenge the tow, they said that I would have to talk to Eden Springs, which I did.
I sent an email, of which I have not received a response, so I called around 6 times today to check up on their "investigation". Every time I called, I received the same answer, "We are still investigating". When I asked to talk to the person who swore she would get down to the bottom of the matter, Danielle, I was told that she was busy or currently talking to another resident, or talking to the towing company.
I got the same response when asking for an update. They told me constantly that whenever they got new information, they would call me immediately. I was unable to go into the office directly because of class and work, I gave them the number of one of my older brothers and of my mother so if I couldn't be reached at work (which has a strict no cell phone policy) then one of the two would pick up.
By the time Eden Springs closed the office today, neither were called, nor was I sent an email. While I was at work, my mother called the towing company after finding Ohio's towing laws online and spoke with the receptionist, she also told her that it would cost $109 to get the car back and that no one, other than Eden Springs, was allowed to see the pictures taken before the car was towed.
She also told my mother that the reason why the car was towed was because it was blocking a dumpster. Strange since my car was parked between two other cars how that would happen. They refused to send us pictures of the car before it was towed and Eden Springs didn't offer it either.
To be honest I just want my car back without being charged when I haven't done anything wrong. I hope this story will help the issues surrounding the predatory towing plaguing Columbus and scare other towing companies into leaving the innocent alone.
