We visited the local Cohen's location in Forteau, NL to review our options for laminate flooring. After reviewing some samples we picked out a specific flooring that was originally priced at $2.29 per square foot. My girlfriend, however, did some additional research on similar flooring to see if we could find a better price. After finding a similar option for much less she contacted the local branch manager to negotiate the price. He instantly advised her that he could offer the flooring now for $1.79 to $1.99 per square foot. Therefore, we decided to go forward with the order based on this quote. Before ordering I emailed the branch manager to confirm the new price and he advised me to contact the employee with the price previously quoted (e.g. the price he advised my girlfriend on a phone conversation) and to make the order with the employee as he was on vacation at that time. My girlfriend contacted the local employee by phone and explained that the manager quoted us for around $1.79 to $1.99 per square foot. The employee stated that ""we'll go ahead with $1.79 if that's what [branch manager's name] stated.”
A month or so passed when we finally received notification that the flooring was in and that it was ready for delivery. We setup a delivery date; however, it wasn't received at the specified time. Given our need for the flooring I visited the store and was allowed to take 30+ boxes with me at the time. I requested the bill; however, the branch manager stated that it wasn't yet processed and that he would send it to me when the flooring was delivered. A little over a week passed when I visited the store again to request final deliver. On April 28, 2014 we received the remainder of the flooring and the invoice using the original amount of $2.29 per square foot. At this point we had already installed the original 30+ packages and were not in a situation to remove anything – the branch manager knew this was the case. Additionally, although I clearly asked him to confirm the “new price” he now claims that there was never any mention of a new price.
We contacted the manager by email and requested an adjusted bill because we had assumed that the invoice was a simple mistake. However, we were notified that the price would remain at $2.29 because there was no paper trail that we could use to confirm the quoted price of $1.79. We then contacted the manager by phone and he claimed to have no recollection of any phone conversation with my girlfriend or advising us on an adjusted price, and stated that the employee does not have any recollection of even talking to my girlfriend (even though the order was made by phone with him).
Our case is still not resolved and are currently trying to contact the franchise headquarters to resolve this issue.
