Want to caution other owners, potential buyers that these kittens or cats have the potential to have several health issues. We inquired about these potential genetic issues - namely PKD (polycystic kidney disease) prior to purchase. First she stated she hadn't heard of it. Then, she said she asked her vet who she works closely with about PKD testing and they said that it isn't part of the sale of the kittens - to test for this disease. She obviously wasn't concerned about her cats or offspring passing this serious condition on.
First, she wanted the kittens gone by 6-7 weeks of age. Everything i have read says 10 weeks. She said the kitten wouldn't be attached to us if we took it sooner. When we took it to our vet who on initial exam saw evidence of feline herpes. We contacted the breeder about it and she said that her vets checked them over and didn't see anything, that they were healthy. We decided we could deal with the possibility of our cat living with symptoms of feline herpes and did not push for returning the cat or our money back.
Fast forward 18 months, our cat became very sick - vomiting, not eating. She was found to be in renal failure due to a urinary tract infection that likely was exacerbated by cysts that were found on her kidneys by the vet with an ultrasound. So, now she has the diagnoses of Polycystic kidney disease with findings already apparant in both kidneys at 20 months old.
She charges $700, but does no health or genetic screening prior to breeding. She breeds the animals, then sells them after 1-2 years to someone else. I contacted her acting like I was interested to see if she was still breeding cats. She responded right away. When I wrote an email about my unhappiness with her breeding ethics and sick cat that we have, she has not responded.
Her web page says "beautiful, healthy, CFA registered Himalyan kittens"
It says "Our cattery has met the requirements of the CFA and qualifies as a Cattery of Excellence"......We strive for 100% satisfaction and guarantee all of our babies"
She now knows our cat is sick, with a diganosed genetic condition and she has not responded to me.
