Charter Communications Reviews

  • Mar 7, 2015

Charter communications kept hounding me and my wife about getting television service with them early 2014, because we didn't have anything but Internet with them, so we finally agreed to let them install cable with us thinking that was a good decision right, boy where we wrong. In May 2014 I came home from work to find out that 3 of my t.v.'s a 60 inch smart t.v., anod my two 55 inch televisions would not come on. When I asked my wife 'what happened' she say she think they got struck by lighting, which was weird because everything else worked and they were connected to a surge protector. So with that I called my insurance company to file a claim. Immediately they told me it had to be verified how the televisions went out so I called out a television repairman, my electric company, and an electrician. They all arrived on the same day. So the electrician and the electrical companychecked everything and couldn't come up with anything, but the television repair person took the televisions apart and concluded they were damaged by lighting, but not through the power source, but it traveled through the hdmi ports, and informed me that the cable box was probably the problem, especially since nothing but the televisions and two of the cable boxes were damaged. At the time I thought it sounded a little far fetched, because I never heard of nothing like that, so I blew it to the side and sent the information to my insurance company. They bought some new televisions and that's the end of the problem right, wrong again.

A couple months later I was having a get together at my house and I was gonna hook up the cable to the new television so the kids could watch television in our bedroom and that's when everything started. I hooked up the cable box, the same way I have been doing since I was a teen, and i got shocked and the television went out, and wouldn't come back on, a brand new television. I tried and tried to get it come back on but I wouldn't. So the next day I called wal-mart, and the television company. No luck I called charter they sent one of their so called technicians out here to inspect the cable boxes. the cable guy got mad because I wouldn't let him hook up the defective cable box to my newer television I just bought lol. I told him to hook it up to the television that just went out because he wasn't gonna damage anymore of my televisions, so while hooking it up me, him, my wife, and he brought someone with him clearly heard the cable boxes cracking and popping.Mand the television would not come on for him either. Then he plugged it up again and ran some scanner over it and said it's not their equipment, but the other dude was was telling me he heard the popping noise, so afterwards he go climbs up the ladder, does something and leaves. Later that week I wake up and noticed the power light on the television was on so I thought maybe the t.v. is fixed, it comes on but all ports one the back of the television do not work. Later on I get a call and email from charter damage control team, telling me to provide more information because their technician claims there is nothing wrong with the boxes, even after it was popping and shocking him.

So two day ago I finally decided I don't want charter t.v. anymore because we couldn't even watch television on two of the boxes, and really everyone in the house just watch shows on the Internet. So I called and cancelled t.v. Service with them I still have phone and Internet. They said to return the equipment in 10 days. Today a charter employee shows up at my house asking for the boxes, claiming they have a recall because the boxes are damaging people televisions. Both me and my wife hear him saying this and I explained to him that they damaged my television a while ago and states yeah they been doing that and gives me receipt and says keep it because they have to get the boxes which was also weird because he just wanted the boxes, I still have the remotes and powercords to the boxes. So I immediatly go to charter and explains what happens and they state they have no records of me contacting them. So I go into my email and contact the person who was over my claim and tells him what just happened and he states that there is no recall and that the employee was lying, not to mention again both me and my wife heard him say this. I still have the damaged t.v.'s all receipts and when I kept in contact with them. I guess they think it's but it's far from over. One thing I can say if anyone reads this and have this problem check the cable box first trust me

I previously had DirecTV and for the most part it was a fine service. But since I had a new roof put on the house, I thought that it was a good time to look at getting a different television provider, so that I wouldn't have to reinstall the dish.

Charter Communications is the monopoly cable provider in my township. For some reason, Michigan has decided that any house can only have one cable provider.

Since Charter was offering to buyout the existing contracts of satalite TV contracts, up to some dollar amount around $500, I thought I would transfer my business and have them pay for the early termination fee that I would incure from DirecTV. My early term fee was $150.00

So, I called to have my service installed, but since I don't have any need for a home telephone, I asked if I could pass on that part of the service. The young lady on the phone had to check with her boss and left me on hold for quite some time. Her boss said that my request would be allowed and that I would still be eligable for the early term reimbursement, without the phone line.

After it is installed and I have incurred the cost at DirecTV, Charter has pulled the offer.

A sales representive for Charter Communications came to my door, asked me who was my cable/internet provider. I responded that I was unemployed, did not have running warter, and used an antenna for TV. She said "honey let me help you" I can give you internet, cable tv,and a landline phone free for one month. I said "really! because I can not afford anything right now. She said "sure and maybe I can get you a job with Charter. Would you like to join me and ride along and see how the job is done." She gave me her cell # and everything was installed the next day. When I called her to ride along she said Charter had just issued a hiring freeze. The next day I get a bill from Charter Communications for $104.74

I opened my eighty year old mother's cable bill to find $190.70 in on demand movie charges. I knew there must be an error. My mother has had charter cable for years, does not order movies. She uses just a few functions on her remote, and would not be able to order an on demand movie if her life depended on it. Not to mention, there were a variety of charges spaced throughout the month and several were adult titles.

I called and was able to confirm with Charter that this was a new pattern for the previous month with no history of charges in the past. Guess what? They said someone in the house ordered the movies on the cable box with the remote and we were responsible for the charges. When I insisted that there was no way that was the case, as my mother had not ordered the movies, they suggested perhaps someone else in the home was ordering them. When I told them she is home bound, and would likely notice a stranger in her house watching porn, they found it humorous, but quickly informed me that it was clearly outlined on our bill that she is responsible for all unauthorized charges.

I informed them we will dispute the charges and was offered a courtesy credit of $10. I see from other posts that this may be a common problem with Charter. I would be interested to know if there is any sort of class action suit in the works.

I received my Charter bill and realized it was way higher than what we normally pay. We check online and realized that have about 20 movies charged to our account. Charges were made at times when we are not even home or while we are sleeping.

I call the customer service and spoke with 2 different people. Both ladies were rude and suggested that we were lying, if those charges are there is because you watch the movies.

It is impossible for me to believe that their system is so perfect that there is no chance that our box was hacked or there is some sort of mistake. We do not have children or visitors staying home so that is out of the picture.

We log into our account online and realized that we also have charges from movies ordered yesterday (while we were not even home!).

We are going to change to another cable company and file a claim. It is outrageous!

Dear Charter Communications,

It is amazing to me that your organization fails to understand the value of a customer. I have been a customer since moving to Fort Worth 18 months ago. That is 18 months that you have been getting my money in exchange for your service. Throughout the month of July, your Internet service was DOWN or UNAVAILABLE more than it was up. I depend on the Internet for my business. I scheduled an apt for a technician to come out and then sat at my house for 3 hours and no one showed up. I rescheduled another apt and sat at my house for 3 more hours and no one showed up. I called and ripped your customer service rep a new one and scheduled yet a 3rd apt. Finally he showed up...45 minutes after the 3 hours window and right when my 1 year old daughter was suppose to be going to sleep. Turns out that the source of the problem was that another one of your technicians messed up the signal to my house when installing service for one of my neighbors. So your technician cause the problem, I lost service for the better part of a month and wasted over 10 hours of my life waiting around for your technicians. All I ask for was a credit for the month of July when my service didn't work. The best you can do is $10. Really? $10 I warned the customer service rep that I would cancel my service and I wasn't joking. I am canceling my service as soon as I find a replacement. What makes it even worse is that I hate DirecTV as well and I have been waiting for my contract to expire so I could consolidate my cable service with my internet service both with Charter, but that will obviously not be happening. So congratulations, you have lost an Internet customer and the opportunity to earn a cable customer all over just $46. Well really just $36 since I did take your $10 credit offer before I cancel the service. Might I add that each time I have called in to speak with a representative I have had to wait a ridiculous amount of time to reach a human after jumping through your automated gate keeper designed to keep customers from reaching a human. Thank God I had this experience before I switched all my services to Charter.

Well, I have a great report to share with this company which I have bent over backwards trying to get them to honor thier own programs and promises on.

Charter communications (a cable and internet provider) has a supposed reward program called "Live It With Charter" they spent lots of money doing tv advertisements for and email spam on the program claiming that the subscriptions services that you have will net you points towards cool stuff in thier rewards area.

enter the Scam. The reason I am calling this a scam is twofold and I will say why right now:

1.) The Points Earned never seem to get applied to the points balance for the services due to endless "technical problems".

2.) If you call and complain about the refusal of them to provide points they tell you they will fix this but rarely do unless a better business report or similar bad press like this site is done.

3.) Once you have spent several hours of your time talking supposed customer service reps in unending cirles you might get some points on your account granted the points are applied manually by a rep but not by the services you bought as the program states. This right here is why I call this a Rip Off or Scam. By the time they get around to giving you points they refuse to honor the points you earned previously and you dont get the points at all. In my particular case I had lost over 6 years of points (and to this very day they are not putting ANY points into my account even after multiple BBB complaints as well as customer service complaints) To be clear I am enrolled in thier rewards system and NOT getting any points for my services. This is false advertising.

4.) If in the unlikely event that you do get some points get ready to enjoy your worthless free prizes which consist of cables for a tv or cable splitters or RCA cables. Of course these are usually out of stock and so you cannot even get those.

5.) They have carefully made the rewards area only "available" for a 3 day window of time each month where the "real" rewards that you may request to exchange points for are. The kicker here is that all of the items are marked "temprarily out of stock" and never can be redeemed.

Thus this "Rewards" program fails to honor even the basics of what it advertises to customers that it can deliver.

This is a total Scam and if you enrolled in extra services like cable channels or more internet in the hopes of getting points or redeeming points you have essentially be defrauded of satisfaction.

I called charter on December 11,2013 to set up a payment plan to avoid my service being disrupted. I was told to pay 200.00 by the 24th and the remaining balance on January 6,2014 and I would avoid it being turned off. On December. 23rd I paid the amount of 200.00 and this morning December 26th I find it turned off. I called to get an explanation and was first told that the remaining balance of 54.00 had to be paid and I had to pay a reconnection fee. I asked her why they had not told me that I needed to pay more than the. 200 and then her story changed. It went from being 54.00 to being. 46.00 and a reconnect fee. When I called her out on why they had lied to me and went back on their word she had no answers. She said they could listen to the recorded convo and see what what said and placed me on hold. When she came back she said that the convo was not recorded and refused to help me any further. In my opinion if you are going to lie to your customers that's bad customer service and you are not worthy of my business. I held up my end and you did not. Im sorry but charter communications is not a company that will be keeping my business after 4 years with them it is time to find someone who is truthful.

This happened twice. Had service installed in August 2012 and in September, while watching the TV, the TV went black. No Picture. Smelled smoke and when I looked over to the box, SMOKE was billowing out of it. TV was plugged into the box directly. Display on the unit went dark also. I went to the cable store the next day and told them what happened and they told me their famous line.... "I'm Sorry" and when I asked them for compensation for my 1 year old TV, they told me that I'll need to fill out a form for damaged equipment. Then I hear another "I'm Sorry", "I don't have any forms at this time". When I came back two months later with another TV with the same problem... I was told again... "I don't have any forms" ... Oh yeah... I forgot to say that they told me again.. "I'm Sorry". I have been asking for almost two years now for the forms, and they never seem to get them in. I held on to the TV for over a year, and during my last move decided to get rid of the evidence. I hate to move trash...

When I called last night to QUIT Charter, because I found a cheaper company with better options and more channels, the person told me he can NOW give me a better price for me to stay. I was paying 144.00 a month for TV with one tier level (NO movie channels) and internet service. I am now paying 158.00 for more service including Internet and now we have telephone service. He offered me their lame service for $75.00. Funny how my monthly dollars were going to pad their pockets and can never come up with forms. I found a way to finally put my claim in for my two TVs and they answered me the next morning but then I got the "I'm sorry" again because I don't have the TVs anymore there is no way for them to pay a claim. I am not trying to get anything for free... the TV's cost me over $400.00 each to replace. Pay for one would make me happy. the only upgrade I did on the TV's was to make the new TVs HD. That only adds about $50.00 per tv..

I guess I should add the the boxes when they installed looked like the biggest pieces of junk. One looked very much like a brick landed on top of it. If it was my job to be doing, I think I would have been TOTALLY embarrassed to bring that in to a customers home. I would suggest to never plug your TV into the back of a cable box ever again. It will mean that when the box blows up, you'll save your TV and you won't have to go through the lies from this company and still have to pay for their lousey service. I have never had a cable problem with any cable service till I ran into this company. I have never seen a lame company make it before til I ran into Charter.

Don't believe the story that their service works even when the weather gets bad... Ours went out every time it rained.... it would rain for 5 - 10 minutes and service would be down for 3 - 4 hours.... I've even had the service go down when the weather was a nice 92 degrees and sunny, and was down for 10 hours then... I swear they should be sued by Direct TV about how their service is so much better than the dish companies. Their service really SUCKS. I had on service rep tell me that the whole city of Fort Worth was out of service... I had to ask him if he knew how big Fort Worth was...

I am so glad I am away from all the lies from this company.... much better service and newer equipment. AND it all works.... funny how that works... I hope someone from Direct TV asks me to be a witness to their lies.. I'll do it for FREE!!!

I know... they'll just tell the judge.. "I'm Sorry" and go on with their B.S.

Take whatever they want out of your bank account without any warning or notification. Lie in sales - not sharing that they will raise your prices the longer you stay with them (didn't do this before they were Charter). Put a virus on my computer with their software and have not been able to get it off after almost a year of continual calls to them.

They have put this customer through hours upon hours of calls to fix things only to not fix them and then to raise rates without notifying me. Was a customer for years and while there is no contract they talked me into a triple play when it switched to Charter, stating it was a way to save money. One may note that you're not informed during the sales pitch that in one years time your bill will increase by about 50%. I've personally asked that my recorded call be brought up and that they be caught in this scam.
