Century Link Reviews

I recently moved to a new apartment. I had Cox cable/internet services at my previous residence. There was never any issues with Internet or Cable. When I moved to my new place, I was informed the provider was CenturyLink. I was given a phone number to call to set it up by the property manager. However, I choose to go online to order both cable and internet.

I was give a monthly fee of $64 and some change for both Internet and Cable Bundle. I was also given a price of approximately $154 up front. It was show that the HD receiver for the internet was free with the set up. Two day later, I received an email from [email protected]. I was told they were trying to reach me by phone ""with no luck."" Because of this I needed to call them at 800-547-0779 so they could finish my order. I was told to use a reference phone number of 602-957-1461, despite the fact that I've never heard of the number.

I finally reached someone, who told me that I was not only going to have to pay for the HD receiver, but they were going to need an upfront fee of $281 dollars and a monthly fee of $101. I told the person that I was given a price, IN WRITING. Apparently, because I am living in an apartment, it would be a different price. This was inspite of the fact that they had my address and apt number when I signed up two days prior.

They also did a credit check, and because of my credit score of 809, I would need a deposit. However, my apartment complex did not need any kind of a deposit because of my score. For some reason I don't need a deposit for an apartment, but I do need a deposite to get internet and cable.

I do know from my experience in consumer law, that a store is required to charge you the price that is shown on the merchandise regardless of whether or not it is incorrect. However, apparently if your Centurylink, that it's not the case, and they can be misleading when it comes to however much they want to charge.

I would NEVER recommend Century Link for internet service. They are impossible to get ahold of on the weekends! [what up with that???] and when you do get ahold of someone - after calling at least a dozen different numbers that are totally inconsistant - you have to tell your story everytime another representative comes on the line. You get transfered around to different people - never to the correct person the first time - and at some point the call is dropped. I have been hung up on twice - and I was not using profanity or raising my voice. You have to give ALL the details of your account information to everyone you talk with - every call I've made to them has taken 45-80 minutes!

Actually getting internet service is off and on. The last time I had to wait a week for a tech to come to my house (because I had to be home) and nothing was wrong. After he went back to the office he called to say it was 'a glitch in the programming' and it was fixed immediately! I have been without service for weeks at a time. And I am in a large city - and would expect they have the best equipment/service available to them to provide for my needs for the $65/mo. I pay for a connection.

They have no concept of ""Customer Service"" - interestingly as I share my experience and frustration with family and friends, people I know living in Mesa AZ have had the same or even worse experience with Century Link. One of my friends had to move because the only service availble to her, in her area, was Century Link and she could NEVER depend on it - so she moved!!!!! Her business depended on having a working internet line.

I will be changing back to Comcast even though they cost a bit more.
