Carbonite LOST most of my files - and admits it! Furthermore they will not release the remaining shreds of files until I sign a waiver releasing them from responsibility. In effect what few pictures are left are also lost to me unless I cave into what is (in my opinion) coercion.
In 2011 I signed up for Carbonite's backup services. I had about 50 GB of photographs that were not replaceable. These are pictures of my now deceased mother, my son's deceased mother, my deceased father-in-law, holidays, vacations, Community Theatre history - FAMILY History - pictures of my boy growing up!
The files backed up. My computer crashed. Because of life circumstances I could not get the computer I wanted to replace the crashed computer for about 2 years. I finally got it and installed Carbonite to restore my files. Their advertising says "Safe. Secure. Carbonite." After many frustrating weeks of attempting to restore my files I contacted their technical support. At first Carbonite blamed my internet speed. I stream Netflix movies without a problem. Strike 1! Then Carbonite blamed my antivirus. I uninstalled my AV and tried again. Not the problem! Strike 2!! I kept getting "File Error: File not found!" messages. After boosting this all the way up the technical ladder I was told that
...the majority of these files within this location are unfortunately, not on our servers....
There is no explanation as to why the files were missing. Carbonite has attempted to lay the issue on me saying that because I had not connected to Carbonite for (they said for 3 years - it was 2 years, 4 months) that was a reason the data was not there! That makes NO Sense! If you take a stack of pictures to a safe deposit box in a bank and don't look at them for two years those pictures WILL STILL BE IN THE SAFE DEPOSIT BOX when you go to get them two years later!
Do NOT Trust Carbonite with your files. It may be that the majority of the time they will have your files if you need them. And sometimes, THEY DON'T!
