My AC stoped working so I called them for a quote. The problem was the evaporator coil leak. They gave me 2 options after the visit. Option 1: replace the evaporator coil, which would cost me about $2500. Option 2: add 2 LB of 410A freon ($265), and clean off the drain ($313).
For those who are not familiar with the cost of labor or the cost of material I'll show you some of my calculation after some research. For Option 1:
the coil for my house should cost around $300-$450.
$2500 - $450 = $2050
after I asked some experts and some online post, this labor of replacing an evaporator coil (nicely installed, easy access) should take roughly about 5 hours.
so that is $400/hr labor fee. I live in Monroe, NC not NYC!
cost of R410A freon is $5/lb through online shopping. 2 lb would only cost them $10 or less since this is a corporation, they should be able to obtain freon from a cheaper source.
Yet! they charged $265 for just 2 lb, and that should be 1 hour worth of labor. so basically $250/hr labor charge for filling in freon.
After I paid the technitian $89 for the quote, he gave an invoice which indicates the payment, but on the back of the invoice, there are coupons. One of the couple says " Total Drain Cleaning for $99, regular price $240"
And! I got the quote which says I need to pay $313 to clean that drain.
Later I called a friend who does AC repairing, and the told me that the quote I got, was a total ripoff.
