Came to our home representing another company named Premier HomePro then tried to sell us remodeilng using his company stating that Premier HomePro had given him permission to do so. He told my wife and me that he would give us a discount for cash. I called Premier HomePro and asked if he could do this and if this was correct after doing an internet search on Brian Matthews. It turns out, he no longer works for Premier HomePro. I was shocked to learn this and asked if they would refer me to another contractor which they did since they have retired.
I stongly recommend that you do not use Brian Matthews in any capacity to do work on your home. He is a slick salesman and I do not trust him.
I researched for a month and got estimates from 5 companies before deciding to use Premier Home Pro. I saw great reviews on Angie's List (I read about 60 of them). Alan Stevens, the Owner was out of town and referred me to Brian Matthews. I think Alan should have been clear that he was referring me to Brian, and he was not an Employee of Premier Home Pro. But, this is not about Alan, because once he heard of everything going on, he did as much as he could to rectify the situation (from his own pocket). Alan is a very nice and upstanding guy.
Brian emailed me (using the signature tag of Premier Home Pro). He came out, gave an estimate and was very knowledgeable in his explanations. We agreed to a price and a start date. We signed a contract on the first day of demo (with Premier Home Pro's) letterhead. He said he'd get the contract countersigned by Alan Stevens and returned within a few days. I now know that this was a complete lie. He never gave us the countersigned contract. So, I have no contract - only emails showing what we agreed to. We agreed to 3 payments. We gave him the 1st of 3 payments on the day we signed the contract. He estimated it would only take 6-8 days. This is how he would get through without getting me the contract, because it would be a pretty quick job.
His crew started demo and began work. They were actually quite nice and things seemed to be moving along. The 2nd payment was due on the 4th day and my husband inadvertently gave him payments #2 and #3. This was a horrendous miscommunication between the two of us. But, there was also an extra $500 in the envelope for overages. Once we realized our mistake (around Day 6), my husband called to ask about the extra money. Brian flew into a rage that we questioned his integrity. He then said he "told Alan he wasn't doing the job anymore." That was a lie too - he never talked to Alan. He was now trying to cover his tracks. He refused to take our calls and have his men (who I later found out were illegal/undocumented) come finish the job. He was a little more than halfway through.
My husband called Alan Stevens and it was the first time Alan ever heard of us having a job with Brian. He said he was referring people to Brian and they were to have some sort of arrangement on fees. But, Brian never told him, used his contracts and kept the money. Alan brought out a great young man and the two of them finished tile, grout, drywall and a host of other things - OUT OF HIS OWN POCKET. He then realized that the guys Brian hired put in the wrong size shower pan, so Alan couldn't re-install the existing shower doors we had. Alan did not have to do this, but he has great integrity. But again, I do wish he'd clarified that he was referring me to Brian. That may have influenced my decision on picking another Contractor. I went with Premier Pro Home because they are licensed in Maryland and had numerous good reviews on their behalf. BRIAN TRADED ON PREMIER HOME PRO'S RECORD.
Brian Matthews is UNHONEST, UNETHICAL and just an awful guy. I'm going to the Maryland Home Improvement Commission next week and I will be filing a lawsuit against him as well. Please contact me if you want further details.
