Branford Academy Reviews

I enrolled in this "school" ,I loosely use that term, last September in hopes to pursue a career on cosmetology. I was told I would be taught everything from hair to make up and the biology that went with it. I ran into some personal issues within the first few months I was enrolled and I was allotted "temporary leave of absence". I have children and I understand there is a limit to how much time you can take off. However, in the beginning, before enrolling, I had an in depth conversation with Diana, that she too is a mother and they work with that. As in not holding it against the student. I was threatened with being thrown out for missing time. and when I did come back there we're rumors made by teachers I was using drugs and whatnot. The teachers, throughout the course of my time there I have seen at least 3 teachers get fired. One of these teachers was 21 and had zero teaching skills, let alone people skills. She had once demeaned me in class, in front of my whole classroom my 3rd week there, great way to make friends. The reason she did so was because during her "lesson" she was teaching something that was not true, and we could all read in the book, as well as common sense, that what she was saying was bs. I went to Diana and she told me I was wrong for politely raising my hand and asking a question. She eventually got fired a few weeks later for literally bashing a student and exposing a very intimate and personal matter this student was dealing with.

Then bring on another 4 teachers one of which was amazing. He actually knew what he was doing had years of teaching under his belt, just barely spoke English. He left because of how unprofessional the school was. I once watched a student sit in a chair and have her hair done by another student. When I asked if I could I was told no. I was that "drug addict" remember. So at the next Mondays meeting she made sure to call me out as a tattle taler. Moving onto another teacher. I took anatomy in high school, granted it was over 15 years ago, some stuff sticks. She had absolutely no idea about anything in that chapter. Another student and I actually wrote up a lesson plan for her. Again, zero teaching experience, more interested in talking about going out and was in her early 20s. The other teachers had no experience and a few were literally straight out of hairdressing school themselves. On of whic, within her first week of working there was already looking for a new job, again because of the unprofessional atmosphere and complete lack of structure. Structure. I don't know how many young women, a lot of us mothers have $20,000 to just play with. I sure don't. I mentioned earlier I wanted to learn what I was promised. I didn't learn to hold scissors properly until I had already attended for 5 months. The make up course, should I say 1 long session of watching one of the directors get pissed off and do someone's make up that most women already know how to do. She flipped out, after legit rescheduling that makeup class at least 5 different times and it was supposed to be more then one day. There are supposed to be a block and b block. To separate freshman and sophomores, from juniors and seniors. Well, never happened it was whatever day Diana deemed fit.

On our practical days, when we weren't in theory (class time, a block and b block) we are supposed to practice on our mannequin heads supervised. However they are so concerned with money that they have students, like myself who didn't even know how to hold scissors, working on clients. I could literally go on for hours about the unprofessionalism as well as lack of structure of any sort for hours. How they will write you up one day for being 5 mind late or going on break a min early to letting some students come in hours late giving them extra hours and letting them sit on their phones all day doing nothing.

This place isn't a school. Its somewhere for women to have their dreams crushed and money taken. Diana will say and do whatever it is to get you in there to just get your money. They do not care about our careers as young adults and mothers. And I have heard horror stories from friends who have tried to withdrawl and move to a different cosmetology school and Diana asking for them to pay her for their hours they didn't complete there. Something needs to be done.
