I brought my 2008 New Beatle convertible in for repair to Bob Boast Volkswagen in Bradenton last week. The vehicle is under Certified Preowned warranty still. I had two reasons for bringing the vehicle in that day. First, its power steering went out and produced a burning smell earlier that day. The power steering was restored once I shut the car off and then restarted it. However, this losing power steering was extremely scary on US 41 and I wanted to make sure that the vehicle was safe. Secondly, there was a feint squeal from under the hood as well that needed to be addressed.
I took the car to see Mike. He passed me off to Tracy. After waiting about 10 minutes, she came into the waiting room for me. She asked me if I recently hit something with the driver's side of my vehicle. I had not. At this point, she reported that my outer tie-rod was bent so much that if I drove it down the road, I would run the risk of it snapping in half today. She said that I needed to pay approximately $500 for a new outer tie-rod and a tire today. I asked her to explain the noises from under the hood, the loss of power steering and the burning smell. She said the burning smell was probably your tire, Meghan. She said if I wanted to trade the car in that their sales department was open 'Til 8. I left feeling as though Bob boast Volkswagen was unwilling to resolve the mechanical concerns I had with the vehicle.
Immediately after leaving the dealership, the car began squealing louder than ever! I immediately drove the car to Pep Boys across the street to have the tie rod and tires checked. They located 3 nails in two tires and plugged them and they said that the tie rod is fine to drive on and certainly will no snap in half.
The next day I took the car to my mechanic in Sarasota (Rob's Auto Repairs). He said that the tie rod was minorly bent, he could straighten it and it did not need to be replaced. He said that there was no way that the damage resulted from an operator's impact, perhaps the tie rod was defective. The squealing noise was the AC belt and the AC pulley system was defective as well. He said there were bits of plastic throughout the inside of my hood. I was charged, $158.25 for these repairs that were supposed to be completed at Bob Boast Volkswagen under warranty. It was a complete waste of time taking my car to Bob Boast Volkswagen. They are either incompetent, do not want to honor their warranty or they were trying to get unnecessary work done in their shop at an exorbitant premium.
I will never purchase or lease a Volkswagen again after dealing with Bob Boast Volkswagen in Bradenton. This is the last straw as I have had a history of dealing with bad business practice in the Volkswagen dealerships of SW FL. In fact, Sun Coast Volkswagen in Sarasota is also a rip off. I had a string of problems occur with my vehicle in 2010. I had brought the car in for a window motor that failed. Immediately after leaving the dealership I had to bring the car back for another problem with the car. It had gotten to the point where I was visiting Sun Coast Volkswagen 3 times in one week. The final straw came when my headlamps suddenly stopped lighting up same day after a visit to Sun Coast. The service manager, Ken Leveine gave me the message that my car had been in an accident and the headlamps were pushed in (they were NOT) and I needed to spend $2000 out of pocket to have them repaired. I took them to a different mechanic whom told me, “WHO EVER WORKED ON THIS CAR LAST PUT YOUR HEADLAMPS IN UPSIDE DOWN!”
Avoid Bob Boast Volkswagen and Sun Coast Volkswagen, Porche & Audi. They are incompetent, will not honor their warranties and will try to get you to throw money at needless repairs.
