The movers showed up 35 minutes late. There were two movers. One man took boxes down ONE at a time while the other loaded the truck. They took care of my stuff as if it were going to the dump. They ripped the boxes and tried to put my furniture on a moving blanket and sliding it down the stairs. (This damaged ALL my furniture) This move should have taken three (3) hours. It took them six (6)!! They milked the time so badly I had to start helping them with the move at one point so they would get the clue to keep it moving! I after I found that ALL, I am NOT exaggerating when I say ALL, every single piece of my furniture was scratched, dented or just completely broke to where I can no longer use it. When I was being roped in to use their business I was told that they are fully insuranced! And that they would take care of my stuff as if it were their own. After reporting the damages, I was told that my move was not fully covered by their insurance. That all scratched, nicks and dents are not covered. I have been calling for a month now to find out the status of the insurance claim on the completely broken furniture and was told they only cover .60 cents per lb. And that my furniture wasn't that heavy so the pay out will be minimal. OK add insult to injury!! So now three weeks later, I have had NO resolution to this issue, I have called several times requesting the owners information and they rude office staff REFUSE to give it to me. Under NO circumstances should you use this company. And at this point I do not know what I can legally do to get this issue resolved and settled. OH and one time I called, and the office guy answered the phone on ACCIDENT, he started talking to the other office staff girl and started talking mad s*** about me!!!! Then when I called back to speak with him, he was a coward and would Not answer his phone. I need legal HELP!! What do I do to get the owners contact information.
On April 20, 2015 I had a phone conference with “JOHN B.” of Big Boy Moving and Storage.
I explained to him that I was looking to move on May 15, 2015. I specifically explained that I needed a flat rate for this move. He and I discussed the particulars of this move ad nauseum. I provided extensive details regarding the move so that there would be nothing hidden from them, such as how many stairs where in the staircase they would climb, exact measurements of the storage unit and the new location address. I explained everything to them in detail so I could get an accurate quote for this move. John B. quoted me $800 as a flat rate for this move and even sent me the written quote with that amount on it. I, in return, provided detailed paperwork showing the layout of the apartment, the map of the apartment location and various other documents.
I instead paid $380 up front. Essentially, almost 50% of the total cost. Big Boy Moving and Storage had all of the pertinent information, we scheduled a moving date of Friday, May 15th and they charged my card for $380.
A supervisor/driver and two helpers showed up. They literally had loaded items on the truck, including a heavy piece of furniture when the supervisor came out and decided to quote me a different price for the job. He started citing things like, "the items were irregularly arranged in the storage unit", "the furniture was bigger than anticipated", "there were things which cost more to move", etc. They wanted to upcharge me by almost $1,000. I was in complete disbelief.
I told them I only owed them $400, because I'd already paid for half of the services. I could not believe what was happening before my eyes. This disagreement went on for nearly 40 minutes.
At this point, I told the supervisor that there was no way I was going to allow them to move my belongings. I couldn't believe the scam that they were trying to pull. Literally, Big Boy Moving and Storage will get your belongings on the truck and then try to upcharge you. I suppose that they have encountered enough desperate people that this has become part of their modus operandi. At this point, I was in tears. I had taken the day off of work, paid for half of the services upfront and now found myself without a reliable moving company and in the midst of a scam.
When I called the corporate office, they initially told me that they would refund me up to 20% of my $380 since there was no work completed. However, two hours later they sent me an e-mail telling me that they had decided not to refund me at all. Big Boy Moving and Storage, essentially, STOLE $380 from me, having done NO WORK.
To be perfectly honest, what this company did to me is no different than a total stranger walking up to you and mugging you.
