I made a reservation through Trip Advisor on Feb 2, 2015 to stay in the Best Western Caprock Inn in Brownfield, Texas on Feb 6, 2015. I was told that the Best Western Caprock Inn would confirm my reservation. The Internet service in northern Nevada, where I was when I meade the reservation, was not very good. I did not see any confirmation from the inn. I double-checked today when I was in a location with better Internet service, and I don't see any confirmation from them.
So on Feb 6, I called them to confirm that I would be arriving at around 7 in the evening, and they told me I didn't have a reservation. When I gave them the Trip Advisor confirmation number, they said, "Oh, yeah, sorry, we had you down for the 4th and charged your card as a no-show when you didn't show up on the 4th."
After doing some more investigating, I discovered that they had vacant rooms on both the 4th and the 6th, so it would have done them no harm to move my reservation to the 6th. I even assured them that I would pay any difference in price between the amount I had paid on Trip Advisor, and their normal rates. But they refused!
I further explained that I had to cancel my credit card, due to someone making unauthorized use of it. The banks were closed by the time I found out that they were not going to give me a room; I was in an unfamiliar place at night (I was in Roswell, NM when I discovered that the Best Western Caprock did not intend to honor the reservation), had no idea where to find an ATM. They didn't care that I would have to either drive all night and try to make it home to San Antonio, Texas; or sleep in my truck by the side of the highway. They just didn't care.
They advertise themselves as "small town friendly family atmosphere." This could hardly be more misleading, unless they mean a highly dysfunctional family.
