As close to a scam as a "legitimate company" can get!
If your company selects Benefit Wallet -- run away! Seriously, this company is as close to a scam ripoff as a "legitimate company" can get. I left my previous employer 2 months ago, and am STILL trying to get my money back from them. They would not honor the transfer request my new HSA provider sent to them, nor would they allow me to initiate a transfer without paying a huge transfer fee.
The rep I spoke with tole me the only way to get my money without paying a fee was to request a check, then call back once I had the check to close the account. OK, extra hoops but no problem -- or so I thought!
I requested a check for the final account balance. By the time Benefit Wallet got around to actually writing and sending the check to me, they had decided to take out a $3.25 service fee -- which they did not tell me about! Then, to add insult to injury, they refused to honor the check THAT THEY WROTE, and charged me another $25 "insufficient funds" fee!
When I called to complain, they claimed that they had "listened to customer service recordings" and started making up stuff that was not discussed. They even claimed that the rep I spoke to had not given me the final amount of my account (so strange, since I managed to write in my notes of the conversation both the rep's name and the total balance she told me to request the check for!). I suggested we listen to the recordings together, to which they replied "those recordings are for internal use only."
Now I am still stuck trying to figure out how to actually get my money out and get the account closed. That and trying to get my $25 back. In the meantime, I have been charged yet another service fee.
Service my arse. Benefit Wallet has designed and is following policies that have been designed for a single purpose -- to rip people off and keep them from actually moving their money to another HSA. They have found loopholes in the law, and are exploiting those loopholes to full extent so they can skim off money that is supposed to be for people to pay our medical bills.
Shame on Benefit Wallet -- and shame on any company who knowingly selects Benefit Wallet as the HSA provider. This company should be shut down, period.
What a scam company. I had funds $100 +/- in my HSA with Benefits Wallet when I last used it over a year ago. I went to use my HSA to pay for an Xray and Poof.....no balanced left in my account! WTF?
I finally connect with and agent at BW to find out this sham company has been deducting $3.25 per month in "service" fees. Are you F...kidding me? I asked the agent what was the difference between what "Benefits" Wallet is doing to its customers and a bank robber? No answer because there is no difference.
Nothing more then thieves in suits. At least with the Mob you knew who you were dealing with. These A...holes are a more educated, sneaky, devious bunch of low lives. Lesson learned. Do not believe with your companies HR staff tells you are the wonderful "benefits" your company bestows upon you. It's all BS folks.
I heartily agree with the previous poster complaining about this company's incompetence. The website and call center are obviously outsourced, and this has been a source of frustration. At the moment I'm investigating why my 2013 HSa contribution was reversed, with no notification to me. My account activity shows the contribution was credited almost a month after I made it (as my bank verifies), but its reversal performed two weeks BEFORE the contribution! IMHO, these people are complete idiots.
I have an HSA account through BenefitWallet. I used the money to pay medical expenses down to a $0 balance because I no longer make contributions to this account. They added fees after the transactions were originated from their website.
I called to close the account. They said they are going to bounce a check which will incur additional fees on my side in order to extract their additional $3.25 fee. They will also add an additional $25 fee for insufficient funds. Then they will send me a check for the difference instead of paying my medical expenses.
I do not think this was what the new Healthcare Act had intended... for them to extort fees for the bank instead of paying the medical professionals!
In all seriousness, My Benefit Wallet is one of the worst companies I ever dealt with. It appears that the company is organized to find ways to nickel and dime their customers with hidden fees and wrongful charges, all of which are virtually impossible to have undone.
My case, in brief. In January, after leaving my employer, I tried to close my account and withdraw the remaining funds. My Benefit Wallet charges monthly mainentance fees after one month in the cases like mine (changing employers/HSAs), so I wanted to do this before the end of the month. I put in the requests, which of course takes time, in this case about 10 days. This put it over the first of the month. My Benefit Wallet then charged me the monthly maintenance fee, then processed my request for closing the account and dispersal of funds. However, since the maintenance fee lowered my account balance below the requested dispersal amount (aka all my previously existing funds), they rejected the request and charged me an insufficient funds fee of $25. Basically, they processed the maintenance fee prior to the dispersal request despite the latter occurring first. I appealed this, which was rejected since "all fees are in the fee schedule and the customer should be aware of them." Lots more to this, but long story short, 7 months later, I still don't have the remaining balance (one more fun fact - they closed my account, which means I have 2 months to take my remaining funds out before another type of maintenance fee occurs, but the appeals process takes at least 6 weeks and I can't take my money out until that is over. They claim they won't charge me b/c of this situation but I don't believe them.).
Every single transaction I have had with this company has resulted in a conversation with a supervisor. This company is horrible and my advice is to look elsewhere. As soon as I get my money out my account will be closed.

This company apparently has a primary purpose - to withhold their clients funds as long as possible.
When one of our Doctors tried t to process a debit card payment, the payment was declined "because they used the wrong billing code." So the doctor put it through with another bill code, and subsequently BenefitWallet processed BOTH payments and overdrew the account. We were then unable to use the account for several month. even though there was money in the account, before they replacement cards.
Subsequently, they double posted a debit to the account, and three months later, tell the they paid the doctor twice, so they have to initiate a fraud claim. This is estimated to take at least thirty days to resolve.
Excessive hold times, and incompetent call center staffers are the norm rather than the exception. In the interim, we are unable to access funds which have been deposited.
As soon as our term expires, we will go back to our old provider.
