I applied to a job ad on Craiglist looking for a Financial Analyst/Admin. Assistant ASAP to their New York Branch. The ad was two sentences only.Got a reply 2 days later offering me the job on the spot. No phone call, no interview or any other due diligence whatsoever. The offer was $1,600 bi-weekly, medical and dental for a 30 hour work week. The NY branch turned out to be a home office actually. The e-mail was sent via the Craiglist mailing system so there was not possible to see acutal sender. No signature, no name or contact information was included. I was not even addressed by my name but as "Dear Applicant"... I was told to log onto Yahoo Messenger and add a Brian McGrath for training and setting up a home office. His e-mail was not an Apex Investment Group e-mail but a regular Yahoo mail.
Upon contacting him and informing why I was contacting him he replied "Okay...". Yes, that was his enthusiasm for a new hire...He was not disrespectful, but it seemed that he didn´t actually care about me when I tried to ask questions about the job and company. He kept asking for my address and phone number. He then asked me to compile a price list for a new MacBook Pro, Quickbooks, AccountEdge and Cognito Software, which, when I sent it to him, the accounting department would send me a check for. I didn´t give him my real address because I was a little concerned about the fact that he never answered my questions.
The next day I sent him the list and continued trying to talkt him on Yahoo Messenger. He was only interested in me answering his questions. I had enough and called Apex Investmetn Group´s World Headquarters in Portland,Orgeon. Of course, the number was not in use. McGrath´s excuse was that all lines were down due to upgrades. I asked him about who I could contact. His reply: "told you, we will contact you after processing your information". "What more do you want from me? If this is not the job for you then don´t take it". I continued asking him questions about why a headquarter was unreachable, how they could hire someone without ever seeing or talking to the person and how they could send a more than $2,500 check to such a person. He has not replied to any of my questions several hours ago. And I replied to the e-mail from "HR", but no reply.
I can´t say for sure what kind of scam this is, but there were too many red flags for my liking. When something seems too good to be true, then it uasually is.
