This is becoming a popular scam that effects companies that employ door to door sales representatives. Anthony Jordan Barnhart who goes by "Tony" from Draper, UT now residing in Phoenix, AZ responed to one of our craigslist posts for a sales position that was listed in Phoenix. He said that he would like to come out and sell for our comapny for about 5 months because he needed to make as much money as possible before he went to get married this summer. All that he was asking for was some travel money in the amount of $250 to pay for his gas to get to our location (this should be your first red flag, any good sales rep in the security industry shouldn't need a small amount of money to travel). He sounded like a genuine guy over the phone and he had all of the right answers to all of my questions, he seemed genuine like any decent sales rep would. This is an insignificant amount of money so I agreed to send it to him via walmart to walmart (this should be your second red flag, they want you to do this so that you dont have access to their bank and they can get this in cash from walmart). I was completely skeptical about this because we have been burned by this before but I am a very trusting person. He was supposed to head out that same day that I sent him the money but I got a call from him the following day stating that he had his car inspected by a mechanic and they recommended that he should get some of his belts replcaed for safe travel (this was the third red flag). At this point I was about 90% positive that this was a scam but I had to see it though, it is a small price to pay for some knowledge. He dragged this out for about 4 days, keeping me posted along the way as he was supposedly traveling to our location, some of the excuses were that he had stopped at a friends house for rest and that he pulled over to sleep. He finally gave me an exact time that he was going to meet me at our office but at this point I knew for a fact that it was a scam.
If you own a Home Security, Satelite, pest control or solar company, be ware of these scammers, they have scammed other friends of mine that had paid out as much as $1,100 to people like this Anthony Jordan Barnhart. These are usually people that do have a background in sales so they paint a great picture for you, they know that door to door comapnies are willing to shell out some money in order to recruite and experienced sales rep. My recommendation would be to never agree to give them travel money, if they need that then I would spend the money on a plane ticket to fly them out to your location, this way there wont be any cash exchanged. Also note that any good sales rep should have money, if you are in these industries, you know what good reps can make. I know that this is an insignificant amount of money, I am out $400 but it is the principal of this whole thing, I am an honest guy and I hate it when people take advantage of me, I will never understand why people do this because I am not like them.
